ERIN – When it comes to local projects, Erin Public School is proud to have a good thing growing.
On July 21, the school had a garden party to celebrate its teaching gardens – now in it’s fifth year.
Volunteer Jen Edwards said the project began as a teacher initiative to help students learn hands on where their food comes from.
However, someone was needed to assist in looking after the gardens in the summer months, which is where Edwards came in.
At the same time, she noted teacher involvement in the gardens has grown from one to six teachers, which represents about a third of the school’s teaching staff.
Edwards noted students harvest the gardens in the fall and the produce is cooked in the classroom.
In turn, that has led to various themes for some of the student gardens, such as ketchup and fries (tomatoes and potatoes).
Edwards added past meals have included butternut squash soup and garlic bread.
Later in the day, Edwards was presented with an environmental award for her work with the seed library.
