WELLINGTON NORTH – An Arthur man has been charged in connection with a fatal collision between a car and a motorcycle last month.
On June 6 around 2:30pm, Wellington County OPP responded to a serious vehicle collision on Wellington Road 14, north of the village of Arthur. Initial reports indicated that a motorcycle and sedan had collided. The operator of the motorcycle, Joey D. Catteau, 51, of Arthur, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The OPP announced on July 8 that the investigation into the accident has concluded. Joseph Raymond Carrier, 62, of Arthur has been charged with Turn not in Safety, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The accused is scheduled to appear in Guelph Court on July 25.
Daytime break-in
CENTRE WELLINGTON – On June 27 at about 12:30pm Wellington County OPP officers responded to a call for a break-in at a house on Wellington Road 29 here.
Police say a woman left the residence at 11:30am and returned about one hour later to find a small, dark grey SUV in the driveway and people in the house.
“The suspects saw the complainant and fled the scene in the SUV and were last seen travelling southbound on County Road 29,” police stated in a press release.
Police say the suspects forced open a rear door and stole several items, including a TV and jewelry.

Shoplifters caught on camera
FERGUS – Police are looking for help to identify two people accused of stealing several items from a store here.
On June 24 Wellington County OPP received a report of a theft the previous day at about 7pm from a pharmacy on Tower Street South in Fergus.
Police say two suspects – one male and one female – entered the store and stole about $300 worth of items.
OPP is asking the public for assistance in identifying the suspects from the surveillance photos.

Beer crime
ARTHUR – Police are looking for help to identify a man responsible for stealing beer from the LCBO here.
On June 22 Wellington County OPP officers were called to the store on Wellington Road 109 after a man stole two cases of beer worth about $60 at about 3pm.
Police are asking for assistance to identify the suspect from a surveillance photo.

Drug charges
MAPLETON – On July 2 just before 3am, Wellington County OPP responded to a call for a pickup truck in the ditch on Wellington Road 86 south of Sideroad 15.
Police say the truck and its occupants were involved in “several traffic related incidents in a neighbouring OPP county where they failed to stop for police earlier that morning.”
Officers located a small amount of suspected methamphetamine inside the vehicle during a search.
Michael Hancock, 27, of North Perth, was charged with possession of methamphetamine and is to appear in Guelph court on Aug. 6.
Kaitlyn Fear, 19, of Guelph, was charged with possession of methamphetamine and failing to comply with an officer. She is to appear in Guelph court on Aug. 6 and was turned over to another policing jurisdiction due to an outstanding warrant.
Smoker stolen
FERGUS – Wellington County OPP recently received a report about the theft of a barbecue smoker, sometime between June 22 at 11pm and June 23 at 10am, from a lawn on Cummings Crescent here.
The recently-purchased item is described as a black Traeger Pro 22 Barbeque Smoker valued at $1,500.

‘Tragic’ long weekend
ORILLIA – What the OPP hoped would be a safe, enjoyable Canada Day Long Weekend for everyone, ended up taking a tragic turn on and off the road.
The OPP responded to four fatal vehicle collisions in which five people lost their lives. Two motorcyclists were among the dead. The deceased, all men, ranged in age from 26 to 61.
While the OPP is relieved to report zero boating deaths, officers did respond to three drownings over the weekend. All three victims were men aged 25 to 37. The OPP also reported one fatal off-road vehicle incident in which a 21-year-old man died.
