GUELPH – With strong leadership, a fresh look, and new strategic plan, the Guelph Wish Fund for Children is ready to help more kids.
“We are asking our community to help us reach as many children as possible,” said Sharon Rice, the agency’s executive director. “We realize some people in Guelph and Wellington County may not understand we are funded locally and only support kids locally.”
She said with national organizations doing similar work, there has long been confusion that the Guelph Wish Fund is a separate charity with a slightly different mandate.
“We’re spreading the word so we can help more kids,” she said.
The Guelph Wish Fund for Children provides wishes to children under the age of 19, residing in Guelph or Wellington County, who have a rare, debilitating syndrome, significant illness or a life-altering injury
The agency’s new tagline, “Making life a little happier,” is a clear explanation of the charity’s service.
“Our goal is to bring some joy to every eligible child,” Rice said. “For some, a memorable experience is what is best for them. Others ask us to support more practical needs such as specialized equipment to make life easier for the child at home.
“Each wish is deeply personal. We work to fill whatever wish best serves the needs of the child and family.”
The foundation takes referrals from teachers, the healthcare community, neighbours or directly from families of children who are eligible
“This year we’re celebrating 35 years in the community,” said Melanie DiReto, board of directors chair. “That’s a huge accomplishment and there is more we can do.
“This is an incredible community, and we rely on word of mouth … to connect us with the children who would benefit from our assistance.”
The agency is 100 per cent community funded and accepts donations.
The agency is prepared for increased demand for its services, while continuing to rely on the community’s generosity to make the wishes possible.
