OTTAWA – Fergus native Perrin Beatty said he is humbled to be invested into the Order of Canada.
On May 8, Governor General Julie Payette invested three companions, nine officers and 27 members into the Order of Canada during a ceremony at Rideau Hal.
Beatty was first elected MP of the Wellington-Grey-Dufferin-Waterloo riding in 1972, at the age of 22. He served as MP in the Wellington County area (the riding changed twice) until 1993.
“I was reminded of how many amazingly talented and dedicated citizens we have throughout this country,” Beatty stated online upon hearing he would join the Order of Canada.
He was congratulated online by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, which stated Beatty has “made immense contributions to bettering the lives of Canadians over the years” and “no doubt … will continue to accomplish great things for Canada.”
The Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest civilian honours.
Created in 1967, it recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
A citation on Beatty’s accomplishments states “Perrin Beatty has contributed to the development of our nation as a politician and corporate leader … he served as minister of seven major departments, including National Defence and External Affairs.
“Following his political career, he led the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters… “
Beatty is also a former chancellor of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and current president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
