Bridge battle – Over 50 Centre Wellington residents gathered on the Badley Bridge in Elora on April 4 to oppose the County of Wellington’s plans to demolish and replace the bridge. Opponents say at least 2,000 residents have signed an online petition calling on the county to refurbish the existing bridge rather than replace it. County officials have stated rehabilitation would extend the bridge’s lifespan by just 20 years, compared to the 50-year lifespan of a new structure. The county has also noted the price for rehabilitation (about $14.5 million) is “more than double” the cost of a new structure ($7.25 million). However, replacement opponents have questioned those figures. “How did the county arrive at $14.5 million as the amount it would take to refurbish the existing bridge? What’s the actual breakdown and has anyone ever seen it?” asked Sarah Barber, a resident and local business owner. Laura Demers, another business owner and resident who helped Barber put together the online petition, said the bridge is “a constant reminder to visitor and villager alike of the charm and character of the community it serves.” She added, “We just want the county to reconsider how much this bridge means to us and then see if they can find a way to save it.” Wellington officials have repeatedly stated the county conducted a thorough consideration of all options for the bridge, starting in 2015, including multiple opportunities for consultation with the community. Opponents say they repeatedly stated their preference for rehabilitation during bridge meetings, but they were ignored. The county plans to start work on the bridge piers this fall, with the bridge to be removed early in 2020 and replaced by December of next year. Submitted photo
