Glen Caradus of Peterborough provided the musical entertainment at the maple syrup festival hosted by Terra Cotta Conservation Area on March 30-31. Hundreds turned out to enjoy the cool fresh air and a demonstration of traditional maple syrup boiling (left photo). The festival continues April 6-7, including pancakes and other goodies, a sugar shack demonstration, a taffy booth, and craftspeople with traditional skills such as blacksmithing, wood decorating, manual tree tapping and cross-cut log sawing. An education booth delivers a warning that local maple trees may stop producing sap suitable for syrup making, due to higher temperatures caused by climate change. By 2070, the Ontario tree-tapping zone may have shifted to north of Lake Superior. Photo by Phil Gravelle
