GUELPH – The University of Guelph is hosting a tribute to Dr. William Winegard next month.
His life and contributions as president of the University of Guelph will be celebrated on April 6, from 11am to noon, at War Memorial Hall.
Winegard died on Jan. 31 at the age of 94. He was an officer in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and served as the University of Guelph’s second president and vice-chancellor from 1967 to 1975.
He was elected as a MP of Guelph in 1984 and in 1988.
In 1998 Winegard became an Officer of the Order of Canada, in 2012 he received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and in 2014 he was awarded the Lincoln Alexander Outstanding Leader Award from the University of Guelph.
There will be a reception following the tribute service on April 6 at the Art Gallery of Guelph.
