Dear Editor:
RE: The heaviest burden, March 14.
In response to Nick Ammerlaan’s letter about taxes on farmland, he doesn’t state how much land he has, nor did he stop and think how much he paid for his land 40 years ago and the increased value of it now.
We are sure there are some homeowners in town paying almost as much as he is in taxes and no land to go with it and they also pay for sewers and water on top of the taxes.
Most of the farms around, we have seen them tear down the original farm house and built humungous houses and then they expect cheaper taxes (we don’t think so).
People in town do not make a profit on their land and houses and we do not have the deductables that are afforded to farmers at income tax time.
We think council has handled the budget fairly and to the best of their ability.
Ted and Judy Watt,
Arthur
