KENILWORTH – Wellington County’s risk management official Kyle Davis provided a 2018 source water protection report to Wellington North council on March 11.
Davis noted that for reporting purposes, Wellington North is subject to two Source Protection Plans (based on watershed or Conservation Authority boundaries): Grand River Plan and the Saugeen Valley, Grey Sauble, Northern Bruce Penisula Plan (Saugeen Valley).
Although the Ausable Bayfield Maitland Valley (ABMV – Maitland Valley) Plan also encompasses part of the municipality, there are no reporting requirements associated with that Plan for the township. In 2018, all Source Protection Plans were in effect.
Mayor Andy Lennox said it is good for members of councillor to see and read the report on drinking water sources – both here and across the county.
“Water is pretty important and we often take it for granted.”
CAO Mike Givens noted that part of this year’s capital budget includes significant reconstruction work on William Street (in Mount Forest). He said this work provides an opportunity to hook up properties currently on septic systems to Mount Forest’s sewage treatment system.
Givens added that Davis is assisting the township in providing information on the advantages of linking to the municipal sewage treatment system.
While it does not happen a lot, Givens noted there are still a number of urban properties in Mount Forest and Arthur which remain on septic systems.
“Depending on where these properties are located, it can be a higher priority.”
Davis noted the William Street properties are within 500 metres of two municipal wells.
“It is a good opportunity to have them switch to municipal services.”
The properties in question are currently served with municipal water.
