LISTOWEL – A Minto man has been charged in connection with a six-hour standoff with police last Friday night.
Just after 11am on Feb. 22, Perth County OPP officers responded to a house on Main Street in Listowel.
“An ongoing investigation related to a wanted person led to the containment of a residence,” police stated in a press release.
Police set up a perimeter around the house and blocked off a section of Main Street between Victoria and Barber avenues.
Three schools in the area were in a “hold and secure” situation, but police stressed there was no threat to the schools.
Members of the OPP West Region Emergency Response Team, Tactics and Rescue Unit, and Canine and Crisis Negotiator Team were all on the scene.
The standoff ended peacefully at about 5:15pm, when police apprehended a suspect.
Nathan Chambers, 21, of Minto, was arrested and charged with theft of a motor vehicle, operation of a vehicle while prohibited, possession of property obtained by crime (over $5,000), failing to comply with a probation order and two counts of failing to comply with a recognizance.
He was held in custody following a bail hearing.
Child on driver’s lap
ERIN – A suspended driver travelling with a child on his lap is facing several charges after being stopped by police last week.
On Feb. 22 at about 7:15am a Wellington County OPP officer stopped a sedan on Main Street in Erin after witnessing a child riding on the driver’s lap.
Police say the officer stopped the driver, who had a suspended licence, and asked why the child was on his lap. The man replied he “did not want to wake the child up,” police stated.
A 36-year-old Erin man was charged with four counts of driving while suspended as well as failing to properly secure a child passenger.
He is to appear in Guelph court on April 17.
Police are reminding drivers that airbags can be lifesavers, but they can also “be fatal when occupants are not seated and buckled in properly.”
Those most at risk are children and small adults, police say, adding the safest position for a child is in the centre of the rear seat.
Part pilfered
ABERFOYLE – On Feb. 13 Wellington County OPP received a report about a catalytic converter being stolen off a pickup truck that was parked at a business here.
Police say that sometime overnight someone removed the part from a 2005 Ford truck and also tampered with a second vehicle, though it does not appear anything else was taken.
