ERIN – Council has approved a plan to appoint one of its members to take the place of Mayor Allan Alls on Wellington County council when the mayor is unable to attend for any reason.
An alternate is allowed in Bill 68, which revised the Municipal Act.
The alternate would speak and vote at county council meetings, but not at committee meetings.
The appointment is for the four-year term of council.
Erin council did not make an appointment during its Jan. 15 meeting, as councillor John Brennan was absent.
Alls put forward a notice of motion that he would ask council at its next meeting to appoint Brennan as the alternate.
Small hike in levy for conservation authority
ERIN – The town’s general levy to support Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) will rise by 0.89 per cent in 2019.
With a general levy of $58,886, plus a special levy of $14,535 that remains unchanged from 2018, council was told on Jan. 15 the town will pay a total of $73,421.
The Region of Peel pays almost 92% of CVC municipal levies, which total about $11.3 million.
Halton pays 5%, Orangeville 2.4% and Erin 0.63%.
Town joins climate protection program
Council passed a resolution on Jan. 15 to become a member of Partners for Climate Protection.
“The town of Erin is committed to being a positive steward of the environment and towards taking proactive steps to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change,” said CAO Nathan Hyde.
The program is run by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and Local Governments for Sustainability, and has over 350 municipalities enlisted.
Members have access to grant opportunities, information, networking and technical assistance to help achieve environmental goals, including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
