GUELPH – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is again reminding the community of the extreme danger of leaving pets outside in severely cold temperatures.
GHS advises that pet owners should be aware of the deadly risks to their pets during cold weather and ensure they are protecting them.
“Keeping pets safe in our community is a top priority for the Guelph Humane Society,” said Lisa Veit, Associate Director.
“Extreme cold is life-threatening to your pet and it is important that pet owners take all precautions to ensure their pet’s welfare.”
GHS advises cat owners to keep their cats indoors at all times during cold temperatures. Cats are very vulnerable to extreme cold and should never be permitted to roam outdoors during these conditions.
Dog owners can protect their dog from frostbite and hypothermia by taking them outside for short periods of time during cold weather.
GHS says that when walking a dog, owners should be mindful of their paws, ears and nose.
If a dog starts to limp or lift its paw(s) up while walking, they could be experiencing discomfort from cold and should be taken to a warm place immediately. While pets may want to be outside, it is the responsibility of the pet owner to know what is best for them.
GHS says “if it’s too cold for you to be outside, then it is too cold for your pets to be outside.”
If you see an animal left outside during cold temperatures, call GHS immediately at 519-824-3091.
