BROWN, Lorne Thomas

May 24, 1924 - January 9, 2019

Lorne passed away peacefully on the morning of January 9, 2019 at Groves Memorial Community Hospital. Survived by his wife of nearly 73 years Vera (nee Acton). Loving father of Dennis (Linda), Bob (Shirley) and Wayne (Sylvia). Proud Grandfather of Neil (Kim), Calvin (Kristine), Sheila (Dave), Randy (Casey), Laura (Lee), Erin, Rob (Nancy), Jesse (Tania), Rhonda (John) and Jamie (Chantal). Great Grandfather of 30 and Great Great Grandfather of 7. Lorne served in the Royal Canadian Navy as a gunner in WWll, Reeve of East Garafraxa Township in the early 1970’s, serving as Warden of Dufferin County in 1975. He joined Prince Arthur Lodge #334 in 1957, served as Master in 1971, Past District Deputy Grand Master of Grey District, member of Supreme Council 33°, member of Guelph Shrine Club, longtime member of Grand River Conservation Authority Executive Board, longtime member of St. John’s United Church in Belwood where he served on the Unified Board in many capacities, and served on the Board of Education in the early 1950’s. Lorne and Vera farmed on the fourth line of West Garafraxa from 1947 – 1966 when they moved to the ninth line of East Garafraxa, retiring to Elora in 1997. Lorne continued farming for a few more years by driving to London to help his son Dennis. That is where he finally got to ride around in a heated and air conditioned cab, complete with stereo and power controls. After a few years of helping Dennis, he decided that the equipment was getting too big for his liking and the farms too far apart. He devoted his final years to looking after Vera, the love of his life who was always by his side. The family would like to thank the staff of Groves Memorial Hospital, especially Dr. Robert Norrie, his personal physician whose compassion and caring was very appreciated by the family and whom Lorne respected greatly, and Dr. Matt Westendorp and Dr. Pam Carlson who called Bob and Shirley early Wednesday morning in time for them to be with Lorne at his passing. A very special thank you to the staff at Arthur Caressant Care, especially Lorie for her compassionate care. Family and friends visited on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 from 2:00 to 4:00pm & 7:00 to 9:00pm at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home, 280 St. David St. South, Fergus with a Masonic Service beginning at 6:30pm. A Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at 11:00am at St. John’s United Church, 28 Queen St., Belwood.
