On Thursday, November 22, 2018 with family by her side, Elizabeth Shirley (Lammechien Zwaantje) Hummel (nee Stryker), passed peacefully from this earth to her heavenly home in glory. Beloved wife to Peter Hummel (predeceased 2015) and loving mother to Peter (Lydia), John, Michael (BJ), Stephen (Sharon), Maggie (Eddie), David (Sharon), Elizabeth, Christine, Robert (Kaley), Andrew (Laurie) and Brian (Sarah). Oma Hummel will be greatly missed by her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Predeceased by her parents, Albertus and Margaret Stryker, and by her sister Evelyn (Evert) Middel, Elizabeth will be remembered by her brother John (Betty dec.) Stryker, sister Marianne (Nick) Dykema, sister Joanne (Auke) de Jong, and by her many nieces, nephews and cousins. Elizabeth was born in Dedemsuaart in the Netherlands on March 17, 1941. She immigrated to Canada in 1951 along with her family and lived in the Clinton Ontario area until marrying Peter Hummel and settling on a farm in the Bayfield area. There she had 11 children born to her. Later they moved to the Arthur area to a farm where the large family had room to grow and have many family gatherings. She was an inspiration to many with her strength and caring love for both babies and the elderly alike as she baby sat and then worked at the original Wellington Terrace in Elora. Many of the staff at the current Wellington Terrace remember working with Elizabeth in years gone by and they have been wonderful in their care for her in her final years at the current Wellington Terrace. She was also a volunteer at the local Food Bank in Arthur as she always remembered what it was like to make food stretch to feed her hungry large family as well as always being hospitable to feed any hungry guests that may appear on her door step. Besides family, Elizabeth’s greatest passion was for the Lord Jesus Christ. She had an unwavering faith and love for the Lord which was evident to all who knew her. Family and friends were invited to share their memories of Elizabeth with her family during visitation at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home, 280 St. David St., South, Fergus on Saturday, November 24, 2018 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. A Private Family Funeral Service will take place with interment at the Clinton Cemetery to follow on another date. Memorial donations can be directed to Father’s Heart Healing Ministries at www.fathershearthealingministries.com or to the Arthur Food Bank. Arrangements are entrusted with the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home.
