4-H participants learn cooking basics

BADENOCH – The third meeting of the Badenoch Hard Workers 4-H Club was held at the home of Joan Law.

They learned about the difference between metric and imperial measurements: 3 tablespoons = 15 milliliters, 1 cup = 250 milliliters.

They divided into two groups.  One made a cooked cheesecake.  The other made mini cheesecakes which did not need baking.

Cherry pie filling was the topping. Both cheesecakes were delicious. The meeting closed with the 4H Pledge and Motto.

The fourth meeting of the club was held Nov. 9.

They learned about handy ingredients substitutes. Did you know that honey or dark corn syrup could replace molasses?

If you have no whipped cream, you can whip together two bananas, sugar and 2 egg whites.

They divided into groups of two to make apple pie, and learned not to handle the pastry too much, making the crust tough.

They flavoured the pies with cinnamon or nutmeg, and took them home to bake.

The meeting closed with the 4H Pledge and Motto.

At meeting five, Mrs. Hunter brought a batch of dough.

They punched it down, rolled it out (the hardest part) and  spread the dough with butter, brown sugar and cinnamon.

It was allowed to rise for on half hour and then they baked it.

They then made their own dough and went through the same process, taking buns home to bake.

The minutes were read and approved, and the meeting was closed with the 4H Pledge and Motto.
