Erin councillors take oath of office

ERIN – Town council officially launched a new term on Dec. 4, with Mayor Allan Alls predicting it will be the “most amazing four years for the town of Erin.”

He thanked residents of Erin who “took the time to vote” and said it is an exciting time in the town’s history.

“The decisions made over the next four years will chart a course for generations to come,” he said. “The road will be long, and sometimes it will be challenging. We will not always agree, but it is important that we disagree respectfully.”

Karen Murphy, a Justice of the Peace from Peel Region, conducted the swearing-in ceremony for the seventh council since the town was created 20 years ago in an amalgamation of the Township and Village of Erin.

“I join you in congratulating the new council and we are looking forward to the new and innovative ideas they will have for the growth of the town of Erin,” she said.

The oath had the members promising to do the job to the best of their ability, not receiving any improper payment or reward, and bearing “true allegiance” to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

First Nation Chief Stacey LaForme was not able to attend the meeting as planned, but the mayor read out the town’s new land acknowledgement.

“We acknowledge that the land on which we gather is part of the treaty lands and territory of the Mississaugas of the New Credit,” he said.

“The town of Erin is reminded that the land on which we live and work is steeped in rich, Indigenous history, and is home to many First Nations, Metis, Inuit and other global Indigenous people today.”

Town crier Andrew Welch welcomed the new council, reminding them of the “sacred trust” that Erin residents have placed in their hands.

Deacon Irene Walback said a blessing, urging council to work for the common good and to remember the needs of those who “live on the margins.”

“Grant each of our elected officials and us the wisdom and courage to know and do what is right and good and true. May they and we speak out when it is time to speak out, and listen patiently and receptively when it is time to listen.

“May our elected officials and we be guided by the spirit of community, the spirit of justice and the spirit of love.”
