A new beginning

A new year, a new decade, and a chance at a new beginning; 2011 will be a year of decision.

There are no fewer than five provincial elections expected across Canada this fall.

And, with a minority Government in the House of Commons in Ottawa, a federal election is a possibility for this year as well. Ontario is scheduled to go to the polls on Oct. 6th.

What will be the outcome?

During my very first election campaign in 1990, I remember saying Bob Rae’s NDP would never form the government. Learning from my mistake, I have not offered any predictions on elections since then.

Still, we can expect a vigorous public debate as the McGuinty Liberals attempt to divert attention from their record, and the Opposition parties propose their alternative platforms.

With every provincial election, it is said Ontario is at a crossroads. It is always true. For me, these are some of the questions that require responses in 2011.

How are we going to ensure the vitality of the economy, in a way that creates new jobs and new wealth?

How and when will we balance the budget, so that we stop adding to the already staggering provincial debt?

How can we stretch our available resources to ensure excellent health care is available to all when they need it?

How do we create a culture of continuous improvement in our schools, to prepare our students for the opportunities of the 21st century?

How can we make sure our seniors and disabled receive the compassionate care and support services they deserve?

How do we stabilize our hydro bills, while ensuring a reliable electricity system we can count on?

How can we reduce our collective environmental footprint? How will we strengthen our communities?

How can we hold our elected representatives to a higher standard of accountability and integrity?

How can we restore a sense of hope that the future will be better than the present?

Our party is seeking the ideas and advice of all Ontarians as we plan for 2011 and beyond. You can participate by logging on to: www.HaveYourSayOntario.ca.
