MITCHELL, Edward Robert

MITCHELL, Edward Robert;  November 8, 1932 – February 11, 2015. Edward Robert Mitchell of Elora, died on February 11, 2015 at the Groves Memorial Community Hospital, Fergus. Ted was the youngest son of Edward and Alice (Bohn) Mitchell. Predeceased by his sister Mary, his brothers James (Pat) and John (Edith), and nephew Grant Mitchell. He is survived by his wife of thirty-four years, Elizabeth Miles Mitchell; his son John Edward Mitchell, Guelph; three nephews; three nieces and their families. Ted grew up on the Mitchell family farm, established in 1832, on Paisley Road, Guelph Township. He counted haying, hoeing turnips, and driving cattle among his favourite  chores and retained fond memories of the farm. He attended Waterloo Lutheran College and completed his honours degree from Western University in 1956, then began his career as a history teacher in Parry Sound. He completed an MA at the University of Waterloo in 1967. Ted returned to Guelph in 1974, where he taught at John F Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute until his retirement in 1989, and ran a cow-calf operation on the family farm. Ted was an avid historian, contributing a chapter to the book, Guelph: Perspectives on a Century of Change, and researching the genealogy of the Mitchell family. He was an active member of the Guelph Historical Society and the Wellington County Historical Society. Ted loved nature and outdoor activities, and enjoyed sharing his seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of crops, flowers, birds and animals with family and friends. Ted was a dedicated Christian whose faith sustained him throughout his life. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Elora, or Threshold Ministries. The family will receive friends at the WALL-CUSTANCE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 206 Norfolk St., Guelph from 2–4 pm and 7–9 pm on Monday February 23. A memorial service will take place at the Church of St. John The Evangelist, Elora, at 11am Tuesday February 24.
