HAZLETT, Dr. Barbara McKinnon, MD, FRCP (C)

HAZLETT, Dr. Barbara McKinnon, MD, FRCP (C); December 13, 1926 – November 30, 2014. Barbara passed away peacefully in Elora, Ontario on November 30th, 2014 at the age of 87. She is survived by her sisters Ann Ormrod (and her husband Keith) and Jane Bryans (late husband Fred)  and numerous nieces and nephews.  Barbara graduated in Medicine in 1949 from the U of T: years earlier, both her parents, Neil and Hollie McKinnon, had also graduated from the same faculty. In her professional career she was a highly respected clinician.  She followed in the steps of an old friend, Charley Best, and became a specialist and authority in diabetes. She is remembered by many medical students whom she taught.  In the words of a friend and colleague,  Barbara was a wonderful, caring, thoughtful and personal physician to countless most fortunate patients. She was a founding member of the K.J.R Wightman Club.  In her retirement years in Elora she was involved in the community, in St. John’s Church, the Elora Festival, the Red Cross, the Book Sale, Groves Memorial Hospital, and was the caregiver of the swans in the winter. In this day of technology it is of interest to note that all of Barbara’s referral letters were written with care by hand. Barbara loved her animals, birds, dogs, cats, chinchillas, rabbits and her horse from yesteryear, Tony. She will be very fondly remembered especially  by her friend Cathy Krewenki and by her cousin Mary Hepburn McDougall. The family would like to thank Cathy, who was with Barbara when she passed away, for her immense kindness and understanding and for her steadfast loyalty. They would also like to thank Dr. Pridham and the nurses and care givers who helped make Barbara more comfortable in the last few weeks. Barbara will be missed by her family and her many friends and by her little dog, Truly. If desired,  donations may be made in Barbara’s memory to the Groves Memorial Community Hospital Foundation, 235 Union Street East, Fergus, Ontario  N1M 1W3. At Barbara’s request there will be no service.
Barbara, we salute you.
