Cairns, John “Chon” Crawford of Elora, Ontario. July 19 1921 – May 14 2014, surrounded by family, song and poetry. Predeceased by parents Hugh and Lily (Crawford) Cairns of Galt, Ontario; brother James. Survived by brother Alan, spouse Beverley (nee Woolmer), children Sandra; Lisa (Woody); Stephanie (Eric); Eva (David); Graeme; grandchildren Allegra, Riel (Melissa), Rowan, Sebastian, Logan, and Anders; and three great grandchildren. His book My Life as A Kid (2010) described his youth in Galt, the influences of Scottish immigrant parents and the Great Depression. WWII RCAF service in India and Burma was followed by a BA, University of Western Ontario (1951); marriage to Beverley; and six years as District Officer and Commissioner in Tanganyika, recounted in his 1958 book, Bush and Boma. After further studies, he worked as educational advisor to the Government of Eastern Nigeria (1962-1966). Returning to Canada, he was responsible for adult education programs throughout the Northwest Territories for the federal government. In 1968, he became Director of UNESCO’s Experimental World Literacy program, working around the world. Six years later he joined the University of Guelph as Director of the Centre for International Programs. After retirement in 1986, John consulted internationally into his 80s. He continued gardening, and restoring homes in Elora and Quebec. Lover of literature, scenery, an honest day’s work, gin and tonic, and apple pie, he described his life as “a great adventure and something worthwhile”. Condolences can be left at www.erbgood.com.
