Cumming, George Wallace; With great sadness, we announce the passing of Wallace Cumming of Guelph, in his 94th year, on March 30, 2009. Dear husband of the late Bernice Cutler (1990). Much loved and respected father of his late daughter, Doreen (1990) and her husband Art Weis, Larry and his wife Nancy, Joyce and her husband Dave Jeffreys, and Brian. Devoted Grandpa of Tony (Jenn), Tim (Howaida) and Joanna Weis, Joel (Tammy) Cumming, Brian Scroggins (friend Mandy), and Emma, Alec and Louise Cumming. Proud Great-Grandpa of Marley and Kevay Weis, Essiyah, Ibraheem and Mousa Weis, and Elle and Jack Cumming. Loved and admired by sisters, Alberta Auger and Margaret Bolender. Also sadly missed by sister-in-law Helen Paisley, Art’s friend Dianne, the Saskatchewan cousins, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends in Ontario and California. Predeceased by his parents, Robert and Ettie Cumming, sister Ethel Farrelly and brothers-in-law Harold Auger, Lorne Bolender and Len Farrelly. Born in Pilkington Township in 1915, Wallace took over the family farm after the war, and operated a beef farm until 1970. His “retirement” to Elora morphed into the founding of Cumming Bus Service, a company that he operated with his son, Brian, and which bused generations of school children, sports teams and Fergus and Elora residents who worked in Guelph. Wallace didn’t consider himself to really be retired until he began to spend his winters in Cathedral City, California at the age of 80. Wallace was a member of Squadron #418 Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, and was a lifetime member of R.C.L. Branch #229. He was an active supporter and participant in his community. Wallace supported Minor Sports as a fan, donor, volunteer, team manager, and driver. He became a fan of every sport that his children and grandchildren ever played, probably watching thousands of their games of hockey, soccer, basketball or croquet. In addition to his own participation in curling, Wallace loved to dance and play cards. He began to play shuffleboard in California, winning tournaments as recently as a few months ago. Wallace was a member of the Elora United Church, an honorary lifetime member of the Elora Curling Club, a former member of Elora Council, and a volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society. He preferred to make quiet contributions and was doubtlessly involved with many events and activities that his family knew nothing about. The Township Of Mapleton named a park in his honour, in recognition of his contribution of a parcel of land in the Village of Alma. As was typical of Wallace, he didn’t mention it to anyone, and most of his family missed the event. Family received friends at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Home, 37 Church St. Elora on Friday, April 3, 2009 from 3-5pm and 7-9 pm. Memorial Service was celebrated on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 11am at Elora United Church, Geddes St. Elora. As an expression of sympathy, donations to the ‘Township of Mapleton – Wallace Cumming Park Development Fund’ or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
