Dear Editor:
I have a solution for David Brandow’s (Selfish Monster Feb. 24) crisis of conscience regarding his willingness to pay more in tax repentance for his use of fossil fuels. There are companies that will sooth his concerns and ensure 100% of his electricity is sourced as renewable. After paying his astronomical hydro bill he can submit his charges to companies such as Bullfrog Power. They will calculate the cost difference between fossil VS renewable pricing and send a second bill for the increased cost of the renewable energy for him to pay.
In 20 years when his “children… bemoan how we could have solved this problem” of global warming, he can show them his carbon certificates, indulgences if you will, to show he tried. As an added bonus through his direct renewable payments exclusionary of government taxation he will contribute towards the electric bills of, as MPP Ted Arnott mentions (Queen’s Park Report Feb. 24) “many families and seniors (who) can’t afford to pay their hydro bills”. Or as Mr. Brandow characterizes them “selfish monsters”.
To put this increased cost in perspective and in accordance with their website information, Bullfrog Power on behalf of their 10000 residential customers collectively pays over $2 million above market price for electricity over the course of 1 year.
Personally I feel there are worthier charities to give to.
