Last week, Justin Trudeau gave would-be Liberal candidates no choice but to be pro-choice when it comes to abortion. In light of this unilateral act of censorship, former U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower’s words seem apposite: “As it is an ancient truth that freedom cannot be legislated into existence, so it is no less obvious that freedom cannot be censored into existence.”
As long as neither the Supreme Court of Canada nor a majority of Canadians believe that the question of abortion on demand has been adequately addressed — we have no law that expressly permits it — and as long as parliamentarians continue to hide their heads in the sand, the issue isn’t going to go away, despite Justin Trudeau’s contempt for the democratic process, the hallmark of which is open parliamentary debate.
So, not only has he told future Liberal candidates to keep quiet on the subject, he’s effectively told most Canadians and our highest court to keep their two cents to themselves, too.
Since Trudeau has declared his support for abortion, I can’t help but wonder what his plans might be for euthanasia — another issue billed by its proponents as a matter of freedom that also involves the taking of life. Perhaps he’d merely shrug and say, “Just watch me.”
