Mount Forest 30-house subdivision gets the go ahead

Property development company Mount Forest Development Inc. presented its plans to build a 30-dwelling subdivision for a second time at the Wellington North council meeting Sept. 10.

The proposal is to build the subdivision on vacant land along the south side of Durham Street and to the east of Main street in Mount Forest.

A public meeting about the draft plans was held earlier this summer. The second public meeting was held to make sure the notice requirements set out in the planning act were met.

The Township of Wellington North was asked to give notice and hold a public meeting on behalf of the County of Wellington.

Ahead of the meeting, notice was sent to property owners within 120 meters as well as to the required agencies, and signage was posted on the property on Aug. 15.

The issue of fencing around the subdivision was brought up by one resident at the meeting, who was keen for the development to go ahead in the hopes that a fence around the area would replace his own that was falling down.

“Typically the [property developer] would work with the neighbor, some people have a fence that they don’t want destroyed. It’s likely that there will be a fence on the property boundary on this applicant’s property,” explained planning consultant Astrid Clos.

Mount Forest resident John Plume also came to the public meeting to give his support for the subdivision.

“[I] have a neighbouring property down the road; I think the town needs this kind of development,” said Plume.

The subdivision will consist of 15 semi-detached houses equaling a total of 30 dwelling units. The lands are currently zoned to allow semi-detached residential use.
