The fourth meeting of the 4-H poultry club was held on June 8th at Mimosa Church.
Lily opened the meeting with the 4-H pledge. Following this, the secretary report was read, and the minutes were adopted as read. This motion was seconded and carried. Next, the press report was read. Roll call then took place, and members had to tell the club about their chickens and how they are doing.
Most were doing well, and there were not that many incidents. Leader June next explained that the four stations and competitions for the golden egg were to be held later that night, because we had some special visitors.
All members then went outside to see many different types of show-birds that we would be learning about. We were taught about what to look for in a good and healthy bird, biosecurity (diseases and how to prevent them) and other things.
We were presented with many show-birds, such as large foul and bantams, which were 10-11 weeks of age. One bird we looked at was the Leghorn Red Pyle Chicken.
All club members were also taught about divisions, including single combs, rose combs, and feather legs. Getting to know these many types of birds, their purposes, how they are shown, and what they are known for was really interesting.
Once the demonstration ended, everyone went back inside, where we went to four centers for the competition. The four centers were videos about training chickens, a quiz about chicken trivia, a quiz on chicken facts, and memorizing chicken facts.
After this, we then put our skills to the test and filled out a sheet on all the facts we had memorized in a true or false.
Leaders then tallied up all the points for each group, which resulted in the group “Poultry People” winning by one point from the “Cheesy Chickens”, and winners received chocolate bars for each member in their group.
The president then closed the meeting with the 4-H motto.
