Wind spreads fire into field of cut corn stalks

Wind is cited as the culprit in a grass fire northeast of Fergus on June 14.

Centre Wellington Deputy Fire Chief Jonathan Karn stated a homeowner had a small burn pile going on his Wellington Road 19 property when the wind spread the fire into a field of cut corn stalks.

The fire grew to approximately one acre in size.

Centre Wellington Fire Rescue firefighters responded and had the fire under control and extinguished within 30 minutes.

Shed fire

On June 17, Centre Wellington Fire Rescue responded to a small shed fire at a cottage on 9th street at Belwood Lake.

Karn stated the owner was on scene at the time and was able to extinguish the majority of the fire.

While both the Elora and Fergus stations were initially called to the reported structure fire, the units from Elora were cancelled before arrival. Crews from Fergus pulled the shed apart to make sure it was fully extinguished and cleared the scene within 30 minutes.

Karn stated a campfire had accidently spread to the shed, causing the fire.
