Local trails and roads were a bit busier over the weekend as riders raised funds for the local food bank.
The Food Cycle Ride is an annual event held to benefit the Centre Wellington Food Bank. Proceeds support the use of the Food Bank’s Community Kitchen to prepare healthy meals for users and other community groups and to teach food preparation classes. The event has raised over $66,000 since its inception in 2011.
Organizer Harvey Thomson thanked all those who supported the event and helped cover operating costs to ensure all pledges go directly to the food bank.
He also thanked volunteers, including members of St. John Ambulance, and acknowledged The Bicycle Tailor, which provided tuneups for bikes prior to the event.
Councillor Don Fisher brought greetings on behalf of the township, noting the events has grown and improved each year.
“It take a lot of dedicated work to make events such at this happen … and a lot of volunteers on the day to make sure things run safely and smoothly,” said Fisher.
He thanked participants for spending part of their day to raise funds for a great cause.
“Centre Wellington Food Bank is such an important institution in our community and does such wonderful work,” said Fisher.
He added that work is not limited to food distribution, but includes education, the community kitchen and links with local suppliers and food advocates.
