The 12th annual Relay for Life Wellington County is set for June 8 at Guelph Lake Conservation Area.
In addition to raising funds for cancer research and support services for people with cancer and their families, organizers say the event brings hope to those whose lives have been impacted by the disease.
The event runs from 6pm to midnight.
“I joined the Relay For Life committee because it gives me hope,” said Thibeca Kengatharan, Relay for Life volunteer chair.
“Relay gives me hope that not all stories have to end the way the ones in my life did. I relay to fight for what I dream of: a world without cancer.”
With nearly one in two Canadians expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, organizers state the event is needed more than ever.
Relay For Life events bring together teams of family, friends and colleagues to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those they have lost and commit to raising funds to fight cancer.
“Relay For Life is more then just a cancer walk – it is a festival-like fundraising event where team members take turns walking around a track,” organizers state.
The evening begins with a guest survivor speaker sharing their cancer journey. This is followed by the Survivor Victory Lap with cancer survivors walking the first lap of the event.
A Wheels of Hope lap has been added this year to recognize volunteer drivers from Wellington County.
Throughout the evening entertainment from Magic 106 will be provided, along with a barbecue and fun activities.
Around 10pm a luminary ceremony serves as an opportunity to remember those taken by cancer and honour those still fighting or who have conquered the disease.
