The Fergus Lions Club is hosting its annual Walk for Dog Guides on May 27 this year.
Funds go directly to the Dog Guide program run by Canadian Lions.
The event is a project of the Fergus and Marsville Lions Clubs.
Dozens of animals are trained for a variety of responsibilities every year.
Dogs are trained for the following purposes: canine vision, hearing ear, service, seizure response, autism assistance and diabetic alert.
Two dogs were recently placed in Fergus: one to Kara Shaw, who was born without any sight, the other to Larry Wainwright.
Shaw was so thrilled with her new helper, she joined the Fergus Lions Club.
Larry Wainwright, a fellow Lion, now he only sees shadows in one eye, nothing in the other.
He received his dog last year.
It costs about $25,000 to train each dog. The program is funded by corporate and private donations, and by fundraisers such as the Dog Walk.
According to the Walk for Dog Guides website, this year’s walk is at 1pm with registration beginning at noon at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex in Fergus.
