On May 24 local students will be traversing local streets to make residents more aware of water issues.
Centre Wellington District High School (CWDHS) teacher Jenna Lilly said the local Me to We club does an annual water walk. The walk raises money for the group’s initiatives around the world.
“They are looking to educate students on the importance of water and what happens when you don’t have easy access to water,” she said.
Lilly admitted that growing up she had water available from the tap and questioned what there was to worry about.
“Our hope is to educate students on how to take action to protect their water and to ensure people across the world have access to water,” she said.
The group is also looking at communities in Northern Ontario and First Nations communities.
On May 24, CWDHS students were to meet at noon and walk to all the elementary schools in Fergus, asking students and teachers to join the walk.
“We hope to walk through downtown Fergus, make lots of noise and make everyone aware of the issue,” she said, adding students were to meet at Victoria Terrace Public School where there will be refreshments and high school students will speak to the elementary students.
“The walk is to symbolize what happens in countries without easy access … having to walk miles to collect water,” Lilly said.
Students will be carrying jugs of water and each team will carry the jug back to their respective school.
“It is really is a way to give students an idea of what it feels like,” she said.
