OPP lay 333 charges during Highway 6 safety blitz

A two-day OPP enforcement blitz earlier this month along Highway 6, south of the Highway 401, resulted in over 300 charges being laid.

The “Safe on 6” traffic safety campaign took place on May 2 and 3 and involved officers from Wellington County, Burlington, Haldimand County and the Highway Safety Division Traffic Support Unit, along with Ministry of Finance (MOF) officials. The initiative targeted motorists committing what the OPP calls “the big four” driving offences – impaired, aggressive  and distracted driving and lack of seat belt use – on Highway 6 south of the 401, extending to almost Port Dover.

“Improving safety on our roads continues to be a top priority for the OPP,” stated Wellington County Detachment Commander Scott Lawson.

Police stopped 353 vehicles, laid 196 “big four” charges and 333 charges overall. Over 534,000 contraband cigarettes were seized through a joint effort of OPP and MOF. This partnership over the past few months has resulted in the seizure of close to 3 million contraband cigarettes.

“Highway 6 in the Township of Puslinch typically sees some of the highest daily traffic volumes in all of Wellington County as motorists travel between Highway 401 and the Queen Elizabeth Way,” stated Lawson. “Clearly there are no shortage of concerns to address on this section of highway.”
