Edwards named Citizen of Year at Shamrock Awards

Jen Edwards says she was “surprised and honoured” to be named Erin’s Citizen of the Year.

She was one of eight Erin residents recognized at the town’s Shamrock Awards ceremony on April 20.

“That’s cool that the town thinks that’s worthwhile, what I do,” Edwards told the Advertiser.

Edwards was nominated by Aubree Smiley, her daycare student, for her efforts to establish and maintain a learning garden at Erin Public School and for organizing the town’s seed library.

Mayor Allan Alls said Edwards deserves recognition.

“She’s done a lot of work that is significant to children,” he said. “She’s, on her own effort, run a garden at the public school and done a lot of work there and got the children involved and, of course, she’s also run the seed library.”

Other volunteers recognized with Shamrock Awards were Edna Woolley (EWCS), Judith Slater (EWCS), Roy Val (Concerned Erin Citizens), Maria Britto (several groups), Sarah Warn (Erin Agricultural Society), Gavin Dandy (Erin Farmer’s Market) and Barbara Harrison (Erin Refugee Action group/Transition Erin).

“Without volunteers, a lot of things would not happen … it’s absolutely vital to any community,” said Alls.
