Senator Rob Black – it has quite a ring to it.
After an 18-month process and serious vetting, Wellington County’s Rob Black was appointed to the Senate of Canada. Initially, word of a senate appointment here seemed to catch people by surprise. This will be the fifth senator with ties to Wellington, the last one ending his tenure 67 years ago in 1951.
Black is well known in rural circles, having been extremely active in 4-H and working in key positions with numerous agricultural organizations over the years. His roots in Wellington run deep, with relations and connections from one end of the county to the other.
We have no doubt Black will be a strong advocate for rural issues and we were glad to see he is keen to involve himself with Indigenous issues, homelessness and poverty amongst others.
And as Wellington Halton-Hills MP Michael Chong pointed out in his remarks, agriculture and farm-friendly representatives are in scarce supply as a population shift from rural to urban takes place.
With his life experiences Black should be able to offer some different perspectives that will help when debating issues or raising awareness.
This is a big News story for Wellington and we wish Senator Black a successful, lengthy career serving in Canada’s upper chamber.
