Council approves $400,000 tender for culvert replacement

A $398,000 tender to replace a culvert located on Mapleton Concession 8 between Sideroads 12 and 15 has been awarded to Wellington Construction Contractors Inc.

Mapleton council authorized acceptance of the tender, the lowest of five submitted, at the March 13 meeting. Tender bids for the project ranged from $398,000 to $627,000.

A report from public works director Sam Mattina notes a provincially mandated inspection in 2016 indicated the culvert “was in such a state of deterioration, that immediate replacement was recommended.”

The project includes the removal of the existing concrete and steel structure and replacement with a cast-in-place reinforced concrete structure of comparable hydraulic capacity. The replacement work will require a full road closure with a detour.

It is anticipated the work will commence by July 15.

The report indicates the project is expected to be completed by Oct. 31.

The report notes the culvert replacement was designed by GM Blueplan Engineering Ltd. through the 2017-18 winter.

Funding was approved in the township’s 2018 capital budget.
