Twirlers bound for world event

Three Superstars Baton Club members are heading to Norway to compete in the 2018 World Federation of National Baton Twirling Associations (WFNBTA) world championships March 29 to April 1.

Alyssa George, 15, and Makenzie Worton, 16, both from Fergus, and Elsie Post, 12, of Arthur, only have a few more days to fine-tune their routines before travelling to Lillehammer, Norway for the competition.

In July 2017, the three Superstars Baton Club members qualified to represent Canada at the world championships overseas. This baton twirling competition occurs every three years with a different host country each time.

Post will represent Canada in the preteen x-strut, solo, rhythmic twirl and 2baton events. George will represent Canada in the junior x-strut and 2baton events and is alternate in the solo and rhythmic twirl events.

Worton is a member of the junior dance twirl team “Beetlejuice.” All three athletes are members of the twirl corps, which will be competing for a top spot in Norway.

Coach Krista DiStasi said the athletes have worked very hard over the past nine months to have their routines ready for the championships.   They have put many hours in fundraising for their trip along with numerous hours a week in a gym training to be the best they can for the world championships.

The athletes and their families would like to thank everyone for their support throughout the journey to Norway.

“Without this support, the journey would not have been as fun or as successful as it has been so far,” said officials.

On March 24, the athletes, with their families and coach, will be leaving Toronto to meet up with the other 55 members of Team Canada.
