Leacock Medal winner Terry Fallis coming to Fergus for Books and Beer

The Elora Writers Festival presents an intimate evening with an award-winning author in the festival’s fourth Books and Beer event.

Books and Beer 4 features Terry Fallis, a two-time winner of the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour and author of six books – his latest, One Brother Shy, came out last year.

The event runs Feb. 27 starting at 7pm at The Red Door Restaurant in the Fountain Head Health Food Store in downtown Fergus.

Tickets are $15 and include an author reading, question and answer period, snacks and beer, sponsored by Wellington Brewery. Tickets are available in advance at Roxanne’s Reflections Book and Card Shop or at the door – space is limited.

A former political strategist, Fallis’ first book, The Best Laid Plans, was a Canadian political satire he presented first as a series of podcasts, and then self-published in book form.

The book won the Leacock medal and was subsequently published through Douglas Gibson Books, as were his next books.

The High Road and Up and Down were shortlisted finalists for the Leacock medal, and Gibson won the prize again for his fourth book, No Relation. Poles Apart (2015) was a finalist.

Fallis’s latest book is One Brother Shy.

Books and Beer was created in 2015 by Writers Festival committee member Jean Mills as a fundraiser for the festival, and featured rural noir author Brad Smith.

“It was a successful fundraiser for the 2015 Elora Writers Festival and brought literature and libations to a cold January evening,” committee member Dave Beynon said.

Last year, Elora-based author Rio Youers read selections from his recently published horror novels, while talking about his writing process.

“The people who have come out to these events enjoy the intimacy of the venue and the opportunity to interact with the writers,” Beynon said.

“The readings and Q and A session stimulate lively conversation among the attendees – and of course there’s beer as well.”

Books and Beer also includes a book signing and time for conversation with the featured author.

The Elora Writers Festival will be held at Aboyne Hall at the Wellington County Museum and Archives on Sunday, May 6 from 1 to 5pm.

This year’s featured authors are Lynden MacIntyre, Drew Hayden Taylor, Kathy Stinson, Kate Blair and Michelle Winters.
