Police are asking for the public’s help to identify an alleged identity thief.
Police say that on Jan. 24 at about 3:30pm a man unsuccessfully attempted to withdraw over $4,000 from the TD Bank on Geddes Street in Elora with “a fraudulently obtained bank card.”
The man “had previously attended another bank in the area, provided a fake identification card and acquired a replacement bank card for a valid client’s account,” police add.
The OPP is asking for help to identify the suspect, who’s about 178cm (five feet, ten inches) tall, from the photo associated with the fake ID.
Anyone with information can contact the Wellington County OPP at 1-888-310-1122. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit a tip online at www.csgw.tips. Tip providers may be eligible for a reward from Crime Stoppers of up to $2,000.
Police are reminding everyone that “fraudsters may target your mail, social media and garbage to victimize you.”
