Fergus Force hockey team folds mid-season

The Fergus Force hockey team is ending its first season early.

General manager Marshall Uretsky posted a notice on the Force website stating the team is ceasing operations for the rest of the season.

The Greater Metro Hockey League (GMHL) site states the team has folded without the option of returning for the next season.

“It is with a great deal of sadness that the team has informed the GMHL and the Township of Centre Wellington that we have ceased operations for the balance of the 2017-2018 season,” states the Force’s post.

The team lost every game played this season except one, which it won by default over the Wiarton Schooners, which also shut down for the season.

“A combination of several factors has put us in the unenviable position of not being able to fulfill our commitments, and a decision we could not continue under present circumstances,” stated the Fergus Force post.

Players are free agents

“All players are deemed free agents for the balance of this season, and may be contacted by any of our teams, and we are also working to help them find other teams to play for to complete their season.”

The statement continues, “We are also seeking a new ownership arrangement to return next season. We would like to extend our gratitude to Centre Wellington, the great folks at the arena, and the good people of Fergus and Elora, and our amazing staff who gave so much of themselves to contribute to our program.”

Uretsky did not return request for an interview by press time.
