Drive according to road, weather conditions: police

With the arrival of winter weather, police are reminding motorists to take extra care on roads.

“Roads could become icy and slippery as temperatures dip below freezing,” states a press release from the Wellington County OPP.

“[We] are urging motorists to prepare for the changing weather by ensuring vehicles are ready and snow tires are on.

“Plan ahead and drive according to weather conditions.”

The OPP offers the following tips for driving in winter weather:

– check weather and road conditions often;

– keep a safe distance behind snow plows;

– install winter tires;

– keep a full tank of gas.

– slow down and give yourself extra travel time;

– clear snow and ice from your vehicle; and

– create a “survival kit.”

Police are also reminding drivers not to call the Provincial Communications Centre (PCC) for road and weather conditions.

Police do not provide this information and “calling the PCC ties up phone lines that others depend on for emergency situations.

“Slow down and make safety your priority.”
