For the second year, Sensational Elora is donating packages of pollinator seeds to elementary schools in Centre Wellington.
The organizers feel that encouraging elementary school students to plant native pollinator plants in their yards helps educate them and other community members on the importance of taking action to protect pollinators.
Pollinating insects are needed to pollinate plants, including fruits and vegetables – a total of one-third of the food we eat. Pollinators ensure the reproductive success of plants and the survival of the wildlife that depend on those plants for food and shelter.
However, pollinators are in decline due to pesticides, pollution, climate change and a loss of habitat and food sources.
Sensational Elora chair Kirk McElwain said, “The schools are very supportive of this program.
“Last year we distributed about 1,000 envelopes, this year we are closer to 1,200 and they would like more.”
To encourage students to plant and care for the seeds when they take them home, Sensational Elora is asking students to send photos of their gardens to info@sensationalelora.com before Sept. 28, 2018.
Their pictures will be added to the website and two names will be drawn to win prizes.
Details will be available at www.sensationalelora.com.
