Centre Wellington’s first mayor passed away earlier this week on Oct. 30.
With his family at his side, George Albert Pinkney passed away peacefully on at the Guelph General Hospital, in his 84th year.
At Centre Wellington council that same day, a minute’s silence was held in his memory.
Centre Wellington Mayor Kelly Linton said Pinkney was not only the first mayor of Centre Wellington, but served a term as Warden of Wellington County in 2001 (representing Centre Wellington), and prior to municipal amalgamations in 1999, served as Reeve of Nichol Township.
Pinkney was also one of the key players in the creation of the Township of Centre Wellington comprised of (or portions of) the former townships of Nichol, Pilkington, West Garafraxa and Eramosa, former village of Elora and former town of Fergus.
Pinkney was predeceased by his loving wife Dorothy (nee Clyde) in 2014, and is fondly remembered by his son Jim (Cathy Baker) and his daughter Ann Bayne (Ron).
Pinkney is described as a caring grandfather to nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Pinkney is survived by his daughter-in-law Carol Anne Pinkney. Predeceased by his son Brian (2002) and three sisters.
Pinkney is remembered as dedicated family man.
A funeral service is scheduled to be held at Barrie Hill United Church near Rockwood, on Nov. 2 at 1pm, with Rev. Lynn Hamilton officiating.
