While it was another tough weekend for the Greater Metro Hockey League’s (GMHL) Fergus Force, several players have been added to the roster recently, and things are looking more positive as the season progresses, say officials.
On Oct. 21 in Meaford, unfortunately several players were forced to miss the game, and combined with lingering injuries, the team had to once again play with only 13 skaters. The team lost steam in another lopsided 11-3 loss.
However, Sunday afternoon at the Fergus Sportsplex, it was a different story. The Force hosted the South Muskoka Shield with close to a full roster for the first time this season, but came up on the short end of a 3-0 final score.
The Shield scored power play goals in each of the first two periods, and added another in the third, outshooting the Force 46-34 in a tight contest throughout.
Both teams had their opportunities on the power play, including each with a five minute advantage as a result of major penalties.
Despite a record of 1-8-0, including a default win against the Wiarton Schooners who have shut down for this season, the team continues to improve, state officials, with a larger roster are available on a nightly basis.
The Force is hosting a Halloween costume contest at the next home game on Oct. 29.
Other team News includes:
– Sean Contreras took a hard shot to the leg blocking a shot and is “day to day”;
– there’s a good chance both Andrew Ferlatte and Matthew Bogenrieder will return from injury this week;
– the Force is working diligently on getting the games streamed live on the GMHL channel; and
– the Force is working with the Fergus Skating Club to provide a venue for local skaters to perform during the first intermissions at home games.
