Fatal chase did not involve county OPP

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating a fatal crash this morning just north of Freelton.

Waterloo Regional Police officials say a vehicle that was fleeing police collided head-on with a tractor trailer south of Puslinch Township.

The male driver of the vehicle and a female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the transport truck was not injured.

According to the SIU, at about 9:30am on Oct. 5, Waterloo Regional Police were informed about an alleged assault of a woman.

“A police officer located a vehicle linked to the assault and attempted to stop it,” on King Street East in Cambridge, states the release.

“The vehicle did not stop. Instead, it made its way to Highway 401 east, and then eventually turned south onto Highway 6.”

It collided with the tractor trailer near Highway 6 and Campbellville Road.

Though the police chase did pass through Puslinch Township via the 401 and Highway 6, spokesperson Marylou Schwindt told the Advertiser Wellington County OPP officers were not involved.

The SIU has assigned six investigators, three forensic investigators and one collision “reconstructionist” to the incident.

Anyone with information can call the SIU at 1-800-787-8529 and anyone with video evidence can upload it through the SIU website.
