National Tree Day was celebrated with family and friends of Ruth and Sheldon Wolfe on Sept. 29 at the Rotary Park.
Clifford and District Horticultural president Vic Palmer planted a large native Hackberry tree beside the prayer labyrinth. Friends from the community joined family members Barb, Peter, and Steven to plant the sign and top off the soil around the memorial tree. Shelley and family arrived later at the hall and Dalton of St. Thomas was unable to attend.
Vic Palmer invited the gathering to the community hall to share recollections of how Ruth and Sheldon contributed to many different community activities.
Mayor George Bridge recalled engaging in many discussions with Sheldon regarding Clifford’s history and the data collected. Sheldon, a former reeve of Clifford had a real passion for finding a permanent spot to house and display historical items.
Elsie Grummett noted the Wolfes were long time members of the Horticultural Society. Ruth was a strong leader making sure the society ran properly while Sheldon did the heavier work.
A rose bush is planted by the columbarium at the Clifford cemetery in Ruth’s honour.
Ellen Underwood noted Sheldon, a member of the Knox United Church church choir, rarely missed practice.
Alieda Murray contributed that both were respected citizens of Clifford all their lives. Ruth started the church library and was librarian for the UCW Presbytery. Sheldon was a charter member of the Clifford Meals on Wheels, delivered many meals, and provided transportation for many people. Sheldon also drove for the Cancer Society. They were active members of the Historical Society and the Minto Retirees Activity Group.
Sheldon was a charter member of the Clifford Lions serving on a number of committees earning a Melvin Jones award, the highest award. He earned the Citizen of Clifford award in 1984.
Sheldon passed away on April 15, 2011 and Ruth passed away on Jan. 29, 2013.
