Hospice Wellington offers volunteer training Oct. 30 to Dec. 11

Hospice Wellington is offering The Art of Companionship, a hospice palliative care volunteer training interactive and comprehensive program.

The program runs from Oct. 30 to Dec. 11 and is offered at the Fergus OPP Community Room at 470 Wellington Road 18.

Topics covered include:

– the volunteer and companioning dying;

– active, sensitive communication;

– signs and symptoms of imminent death;

– pain and symptom management;

– practical care, feeding, body mechanics;

– emotional, psychosocial, family dynamics;

– cultural humility, spirituality, ritual;

– grief and bereavement;

– self-care and compassion fatigue; and

– ethical considerations.

Volunteers make a meaningful difference in someone’s journey with a life-limiting illness. They provide companionship, emotional and physical support, caregiver relief and comfort care. Volunteers can also support individuals who are grieving following the loss of a loved one.

Hospice Wellington is offering training to those interested in becoming a volunteer at end-of-life and in grief and bereavement.
