Mimosa Church, the little stone church on the hill, has been offering rural learning opportunities through 11 seasons of “Food For Thought” dinner lectures.
This season opens with lectures on the great churches of the world the social art evenings are continuing as well with another community social learning event.
During the “Food for Thought” dinner lectures this season Rev. Jeff Davison will lead a series of films and lectures on Great Churches of the World.
Participants can enjoy a full course dinner before the lecture served by the UCW of Mimosa United Church or just attend the one-hour lecture series. Choose one, two or the complete series. You decide.
The series includes:
– Oct. 18: The Churches of Georgia – The Rock-Hewn Churches of Ethiopia;
– Oct. 25: Chartres Cathedral – Winchester Cathedral;
– Nov. 1 – The Cathedral of Siena – St. Peter’s Basilica; and
– Nov. 8 – The Wieskirche in Bavaria – Guadalupe and the Cathedral of Mexico City.
Dinner is served at 6:30pm, lecture begins at 7:30pm and runs until 8:30pm.
Those interested in having dinner must register a few days in advance of each lecture to ensure adequate food as there is dinner seating for 50 only.
Lectures are unlimited seating.
Those more interested in a leisurely social experience might wish to try the social art evenings held once a month starting Sept. 28 from 7 to 9pm.
Participants will be introduced to water colour techniques over coffee and tea and be encouraged to chat and get creative in a small community setting.
Barn raisings and quilting bees are long gone but the need to meet others and define community is still strong.
The aim of these Mimosa Social Art evenings is to give participants an excuse to meet one another and be creative at the same time while building community.
The instructor, June Switzer, has been working with 4-H clubs for years and recently has been instructing 4-H water colour clubs at the church, where she is an elder.
The 4-H members’ work has inspired many adults and parents to wish they too could replicate their pieces. June is donating her time and all proceeds above the cost of supplies will be donated to support community outreach through the church.
Participants must register at least three days in advance to be sure there will be adequate supplies. Projects are suitable for ages nine to 90. No previous art or drawing experience is necessary. All levels of expertise or lack of expertise are welcome. Social art is more about the experience than the outcome.
Social Art evenings cost $20 per session, which includes paints, brushes, paper and light refreshments. Food For Thought dinner and lecture is a freewill offering.
