The reconstruction of Colborne Street from Geddes St. to North Queen St. is underway now and will bring significant improvements to historic downtown Elora, officials say.
With support from the federal Gas Tax Fund, work on Colborne Street will include:
– replacement of the water main, sanitary sewers and storm sewers, new concrete curbs and gutters and asphalt paving of the street;
– lines for hydro and various utilities will be buried underground to create an “open street view”;
– on-street parking, traffic calming measures, new concrete sidewalks and decorative heritage style street lighting improvements;
– parking and sidewalk layout that will be arranged to accommodate a large existing ash tree which is undergoing treatment for the emerald ash borer; and
– landscaping and additional trees.
Construction will be completed by the end of 2017 with the final layer of asphalt to be completed in 2018, township officials say.
The total cost of the project is $1,348,184 with $141,500 coming from the federal Gas Tax Fund.
“The construction on Colborne Street allows township staff to develop and guide a process where we can update our urban streets in an innovative way,” said Centre Wellington Mayor Kelly Linton.
“Colborne Street will provide a welcome view to our downtown core, including tree-lined boulevards, heritage-inspired light standards, buried wires for open street views, and the ability to create on-street parking with traffic calming measures.”
Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, stated in a press release that, “Through the federal Gas Tax Fund, the Government of Canada is helping communities in Ontario, and all across Canada, make strategic investments that support their specific needs.
“The funding provided to Centre Wellington will go towards projects like the rehabilitation of local roads and water infrastructure upgrades, making a difference in residents’ day-to-day lives and supporting a better quality of life now, and well into the future.”
