Animal liberation group targets Whole Hog BBQ

Kitchener Ontario Animal Liberation Alliance (KOALA) has targeted the Wellington Centre for Sustainable Agriculture’s (WCSA’s) premiere fundraising event, the 4th Annual Fergus Whole Hog BBQ.

A press release from the Wellington Centre for Sustainable Agriculture states KOALA began with a “phone blockade” and targeted the Facebook pages of some of the event’s sponsors and supporters.

Meanwhile, WCSA event organizers are ensuring that proper measures are in place should they protest at the event.

“We have met with several members of the group to break bread and to give everyone a place to speak and be heard,” stated Chris Jess, event founder and co-chair.  “These meetings are never easy, but we felt that given the mandate of our organization, it was important to be open with them.”

The barbecue is Sept. 10 at the farmhouse next to the Sportsplex.

This year the event has grown to include 10 chefs ready to showcase their barbecue talents using heritage breed, organic, locally raised pork.

The WCSA supports and promotes learning opportunities that encourage sustainable food communities and manages the township-owned historic century stone farmhouse, community gardens, and organic produce garden located beside the Sportsplex.

“Students learn more about where food comes from, how to grow and cook it, how to make conscientious food choices that support their health, improved animal welfare, the local economy and the planet, all through a sustainable agriculture lens,” added Jess.
