Three local students have been awarded bursaries from the Groves Hospital Volunteer Association (GHVA).
The bursary program, which the association has been running since 1963, annually awards up to three students with $2,000 towards post secondary studies in a health science program.
The 2017 recipients are:
– Jordan Gush from Centre Wellington District High School (CWDHS), who has been accepted to University of Ottawa’s biomedical science program;
– Katie Heath from Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic High School, who was accepted to University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s bachelor of science nursing program; and
– Meghan Smith from CWDHS, who was accepted to Wilfrid Laurier University’s bachelor of kinesiology program.
“The applications from these students were impressive and reassuring that these exemplary leaders are the future of our community,” stated GHVA manager Nancy Peer Lalani.
In order to qualify for the Groves bursaries, students must be a resident of Centre Wellington and attend one of four qualifying schools: CWDHS, St. James Catholic High School in Guelph, Our Lady of Lourdes in Guelph, and Emmanuel Christian High School in Fergus.
The 2017 recipients received a $1,000 cheque from GHVA board vice president Paul MacQueen at their graduation ceremonies. The second installment will be given next year prior to the start of the school year.
The GHVA has awarded 128 bursaries since 1963.
The program is supported by net proceeds from association fundraising initiatives, such as sales at its New to You Shop and the hospital gift shop, as well as the grocery tape program with L&M in Elora.
