Mimosa 4-H: learning outdoor fire, cooking skills

The fourth meeting of the Mimosa 4-H Outdoors Club was held on June 15 at June Switzer’s home.

All members arrived with their mess kits and water bottles.  Vice-president Sarah opened the meeting with the 4-H Pledge after Leader Carol finished roll call.

Each member was assigned to carry one object to the camp site. After a five minute walk, members arrived at a gravel driveway in the middle of a field.  Members were split into six groups of four.

Leaders Carol and Theresa talked about the correct and incorrect ways to place firewood, the types of wood to use to light a fire, and where to light your fire.

All the groups spread out along the driveway and grabbed their materials to try lighting their own fires.

Once all group fires were lit, the leaders spread different foods along a table that members could cook and eat.

There was sausage, meat, snap peas, mushrooms, carrots, veggie mix, multigrain and white wraps, and fajita spice. One at a time, each group placed their food mix together into tin foil pouches which we then re-wrapped in tin foil. Each member then placed their food pouch into the fire to cook. Once cooked, members decided to either eat from their wraps or plates.  After our camp-out dinner, members we roasted marshmallows for dessert. These were delicious.

We carefully put out our fires and started back to meet our awaiting parents.  Sarah then closed the meeting with the 4-H motto.
